Roy Hay’s latest article in Sporting Traditions is about the athletic/pedestrian career of Albert ‘Pompey’ Austin, only one aspect of the life of this remarkable human being. It also tells about the early development of professional running in Australia, which preceded amateur athletics and corrects an error about the identification of the first Aboriginal runner. It is part of a biography of Albert ‘Pompey’ Austin on whichRay is working and is part of a book which will offer a new interpretation of the history of Indigenous involvement in football in the nineteenth century, a foretaste of which appeared in Meanjin last year.
